Malta, a small archipelago in the Mediterranean, is often overlooked by travelers seeking adventure. The Diving Experience

Crystal-Clear Waters

One of the first things that amazed me about diving in Malta was the clarity of the water, with visibility often exceeding 30 meters. This allows divers to fully appreciate the vibrant marine life, ship wrecks and stunning underwater landscapes. For example, at the famous Blue Hole and Cirkewwa ship wreck, I was amazed by the sharp visibility. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced diver, Malta's waters cater to all skill levels.

Diverse Marine Life

Diving in Malta is not just about the scenery; it offers incredible marine life too. I encountered various species, from colorful parrotfish to majestic octopuses. In fact, over 1,000 marine species inhabit the waters around Malta, making it a rich ecosystem. The underwater caves and wrecks are teeming with life, making every dive unique. Exploring the wreck of the HMS Maori, I was fascinated by how the ship has become a vibrant artificial reef.

Iconic Dive Sites

Some of the most iconic dive sites in Malta include the Blue Hole, the Inland Sea, and the wreck of the HMS Maori. Each site offers a different adventure, from exploring underwater caves to navigating through sunken ships. Diving at the Blue Hole left a lasting impression, particularly due to its natural rock formations creating a stunning backdrop for underwater photography. On average, diving enthusiasts log around 70,000 dives annually in Malta, highlighting its popularity and appeal.

Book at dive center in advance, especially during peak season. Many shops supply all the necessary equipment, with prices averaging around €350 for a week of diving, sometimes including accommodation. I did all of my dives at Gozo island which has most of the iconic dive sites.

Weekend Getaway Activities

Exploring Valletta

After 5 days of diving, I went to the main island and took time to explore Valletta, Malta's capital city. The rich history and stunning architecture are eye-catching. I wandered through narrow streets, visited St. John's Co-Cathedral, and admired the beautiful Baroque buildings. Did you know that Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? This vibrant city buzzes with activity, and I often found myself relaxing at local cafes, enjoying a traditional pastizzi. Be sure to visit the ancient city of Madina, situated at the heart of the island.

Relaxing on the Beaches

Malta is home to some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful beaches. After a long day of diving, I loved unwinding on the sandy shores of Golden Bay. The sun-kissed sands and gentle waves created an inviting atmosphere for relaxation. The Golden Bay attracts more than a million visitors annually, a testament to its charm and beauty. And, If you're a cliff diver like me, you should definitely check out St. Peter's Pool.

Nightlife and Dining

As the sun set, Malta's nightlife came alive. I discovered an array of restaurants and bars serving delicious local cuisine and refreshing cocktails. Seafood is a must-try, especially the fresh catch of the day, which I enjoyed at a beachfront restaurant in St Julian's. You will enjoy a lively atmosphere with the sound of waves providing a perfect backdrop for an unforgettable meal.

Unforgettable Adventures Await

The optimal time for diving in Malta is during the spring and fall when water temperatures hover around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, and crowds are smaller. However, summer also offers a lively atmosphere if you enjoy warm weather and cultural events. Malta's small size makes it easy to explore. Renting a car or using public transport is a convenient way to get around.
