Belize: Feeling the Vibes

Belize is a small paradise in Central America, where the jungle meets the sea and adventure awaits at every turn. As a backpacker, this destination proved to be a thrilling playground filled with vibrant cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and exciting activities. Get ready to join me as I share the highlights of my memorable road trip through this beautiful country.

Hitting the Road: Getting to Belize

I kicked off my road trip by crossing the border from Guatemala, one of the main entry point for travelers. I met up with my buddy Anuj from USA in San Ignacio. He had already collected the car we rented for our journey across mainland Belize.

Although, I didn't take public transport in mainland Belize, but it's super cheap and they give you a chance to chat with locals and soak up Belizean culture. It's a great way to get to beautiful spots without spending a lot.

1. Adventuring in San Ignacio: Jungle Vibes

An absolute trip highlight was exploring the ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal)! It offered an exhilarating glimpse into Mayan history. The challenging hike was totally worth it, with thrilling river crossings and rooms brimming with ancient artifacts. You can only access this adventure through a guided trek, which costs about $110 and includes transport and lunch.

I also participated in a guided tour to the magnificent Xunantunich ruins. Climbing the main structure provided spectacular views of the surrounding jungle, making the effort feel rewarding. It’s incredible to think that this site has been around for over a thousand years, showcasing the impressive achievements of the Mayan civilization.

2. Diving in San Pedro: Go Deep or Go Home

San Pedro, located on Ambergris Caye in Belize, is renowned for its stunning marine life and vibrant coral reefs, making it a premier destination for diving enthusiasts. The waters around San Pedro are teeming with diverse marine life, including: Colorful coral reefs, Nurse sharks, Stingrays, Sea turtles and A variety of tropical fish species.

Top Dive Sites

• Hol Chan Marine Reserve: Offers a variety of marine life, including nurse sharks, stingrays, and vibrant coral gardens.

• Shark Ray Alley: A popular spot to swim with nurse sharks and rays in their natural habitat.

• Mexico Rocks: Features beautiful coral formations and a rich diversity of marine species.

• Blue Hole: A world-famous dive site known for its deep blue waters and unique geological formations. Although, i skipped this one because it was expensive, costing around 250$.

The diving conditions in San Pedro are generally favorable, the dry season, from December to April, offers the best conditions with water temperature ranges from 26°C (78°F) in winter to 29°C (84°F) in summer.

After finishing your diving activities, you can explore a local gambling game known as Chicken Drop at Corona Del Mar each evening.

3. Exploring Caye Caulker: A Tropical Paradise

Stepping onto Caye Caulker felt like entering a postcard. The island is known for its laid-back atmosphere, perfect for both relaxation and adventure. One of the highlights of my stay was snorkeling at the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The experience was breathtaking; I swam alongside gentle nurse sharks and lively stingrays!

The island’s motto is “Go Slow,” and I fully embraced it. My afternoons were spent lounging on the beach, sipping rum punches, and bonding with fellow travelers. If you visit, don't miss the delicious street food, particularly the fresh ceviche, which is a local favorite. If you're up for a party, don't miss the Sunday Funday beach bash hosted by Bella's Backpacker hostel.

4. Chilling in Placencia: A Surprise Encounter

For the last leg of our road trip journey, we decided to unwind in Placencia, a tranquil beach town known for its stunning coastline.

At the hostel, we ran into two other backpackers, Nina and Lisa. We clicked right away and ended up traveling together for the next few days. Whether it was staying up late playing drinking games, cooking an Indian dinner for everyone at the hostel, singing Bollywood songs in the car, or jamming with the local band in Hopkins, i truly enjoyed my time with them.

Sunset in Placencia is nothing short of magical. Each evening, the horizon transformed into a palette of oranges, pinks, and purples. Make sure to swing by Barefoot Beach Bar in the evening for some awesome tunes and tasty cocktails !

Lasting Memories of 'Going with the Flow'

Looking back, my Belize road trip was filled with unforgettable moments and incredible experiences. From the colorful coral reefs of Caye Caulker to the historical wonders in San Ignacio, from unexpected encounters in Placencia to playing a traditional musical instrument with vibrant locals in Hopkins, every aspect of this trip has left a lasting mark on my heart.
