El Salvador, often overlooked in Central America, is an incredible hidden treasure! From thrilling hikes up volcanoes and surfing stunning beaches to diving into its vibrant culture, it offers unforgettable experiences that you'll cherish forever!

Why Choose El Salvador?

El Salvador has over 300 km of coastline, dotted with breathtaking beaches perfect for sunbathing and surf. Inland, you'll find mountain ranges with views that stretch for miles, along with charming colonial towns that showcase the country’s history. Notably, tourist areas have become significantly safer, with crime rates dropping by nearly 85% since 2021.

Must-Visit Destinations

  1. El Espíritu de la Montaña

Camping site, El Espíritu de la Montaña near La Unión, provides a distinctive experience where guests can connect with nature and delve into local legends, including the tale of the Spirit of the Mountain. It's a backpacker's paradise, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean from the campsite.

You don't need to bring your own tent or sleeping bag because you can rent them at the camp for $15. At the top of the mountain, there's a restaurant where you can try some local dishes. To get to the campsite, you can catch a chicken bus from La Union to Amapalita and then hike for 2 hours. Or, you can take a shuttle straight from La Union to the campsite for $5.

Santa Ana Volcano, aka lamatepeq, is the tallest volcano in the country, standing at 2,381 meters (7,742 feet). Hikers get to enjoy amazing views of the nearby valleys and Coatepeque Lake. The last time it erupted was in 2005. Entry to the volcano is available solely via a guided hike, costing a total of $18. The hike takes around 1 hour to ascend and 40 minutes to descend.

Coatepeque Lake is a stunning crater lake known for its bright blue waters, covering 25 square kilometers (9.7 square miles) and reaching depths of 115 meters (377 feet). Ideal for swimming, kayaking, and jet-skiing, it is surrounded by lush greenery and charming villages that are vital to the local culture and economy, attracting tourists seeking adventure and natural beauty.

If you're short on time, I'd recommend renting a motorbike in Santa Ana and hitting up the Volcano and the Lake all in one day.
